The Humble Libertarian examines the possibility of Gary Johnson running to get the GOP nod for the highest office in the land: the presidency.
Personally, I think that Gov. Johnson would be an exciting, fresh face to the national political sphere. Unlike other politicians, Johnson has a record of actually cutting the size of government. In his eight year as governor of New Mexico, Johnson vetoed more bills than all the other 49 governors at the time combined.
At a time when government goes out of control more and more every day, Johnson will be the most refreshing political candidate that many have seen in a long time.
The real problem comes by getting the GOP to accept and nominate a candidate that has a real record of cutting government, and not a long line of cheap political talk about fiscal responsibility. More trouble comes from Johnson’s opposition to the failed war on drugs. Unfortunately, most people simply don’t understand the why the war on drugs is worse than the actual drugs that the so-called ‘war’ aims to destroy. However, the public’s misunderstanding of the drug war may be repaired by active public discussion of the issue. Though Johnson must be prepared for attacks from GOP opponents that will say a “vote for Johnson is a vote for rolling meth labs on every corner,” etc, etc.
Johnson’s success or failure as a presidential candidate will depend much on his image in the media, as fringe candidates often get bad, unfair treatment from the media. In order for Johnson to succeed, the Liberty Movement must be in full support, armed and ready to support and defend the positions of liberty. In other words, the success of a Johnson candidacy depends not just on Gary Johnson, but on us as well.

Great analysis, though I see no reason to label Gary Johnson as a “fringe” candidate. He is arguably the most qualified executive that is being speculated about for the 2012 race. He built a multi-million dollar business (one of the most successful in the state) from scratch and, with no big political machine behind him, came from outside of politics to win two terms as Governor.
